Fans around the world are anxiously preparing for the fourth and final season of the popular Netflix series Sex Education, which is scheduled to launch on September 21, 2023, as the countdown for its highly awaited return begins. The anticipation is great following the publication of the video, which features recognizable faces and fascinating hints of new characters.
Season 4 of the iconic comedy-drama Sex Education will soon be on our screens, and it’s going out with a bang. According to Netflix, this will be the show’s final season as Sex Education season 4. With a brand-new school for Otis and company to settle into, the most recent batch of episodes promises to be a breath of fresh air as well. It’s all changed in the school halls this term because Moordale Secondary shut its doors at the conclusion of season 3 and Emma Mackey’s Maeve moved to the United States.

Sex Education Season 4 Trailer
The British comedy has generated controversy and is popular with both viewers and critics. Expectations for the fourth and final season of the show are high based on its 8.3 IMDB rating and 93% Rotten score. As they get ready for the forthcoming season, fans are bracing themselves for an emotional rollercoaster, shocking turns, and the conclusion of the journey of their favorite characters.
Sex Education season 4’s first trailer has arrived, and it makes it clear that this is the show’s last season. In the brief teaser, Otis meets his new classmates at Cavendish Sixth Form College and introduces himself along with the rest of the Moordale cohort.
Otis announces that he is a sex therapist in typical (and embarrassing) Otis form, but not before mistakenly implying that he is dating his mother. We wouldn’t accept anything less from Sex Education season 4. We also catch a peek of Jean enjoying the single life with her new baby, Aimee, and Otis and Ruby exchanging wistful looks.

The New Cast
Since the conclusion of season 3, there have been a number of confirmed departures from the Sex Education season 4 cast. Simone Ashley joined the Bridgerton cast in the second season as the lead character Kate Sharma, and she has since announced that she has permanently switched from contemporary high school to Regency high society. Therefore, we can be certain that Ashley will not be reprising her role as Olivia.
Tanya Reynolds, who plays Ola’s love interest Lily, is also leaving the program, while Patricia Allison, who plays Ola, has also stated that she “won’t be joining the team” for the upcoming season. Reynolds told Radio Times, “I’m not [returning], honestly, which is sad, very sad.
When you have such a large ensemble cast and a large number of characters, I believe you have to let a few older characters go in order to make room for newer ones, which is completely the appropriate thing to do and the way it should happen.” Rakhee Thakrar, a regular on the show who plays instructor Emily Sands in the drama, was the next to leave for Sex Education season 4.
But don’t worry, Sex Education season 4 will still feature plenty of well-known characters. Otis is once again portrayed by Asa Butterfield, and Jean, Otis’ mother who is a sex therapist, is also returned.
Ncuti Gatwa (Eric), Connor Swindells (Adam), Aimee-Lou Wood (Aimee), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson), Dua Saleh (Cal), Mimi Keene (Ruby), Chinenye Ezeudu (Viv), and George Robinson (Isaac) are also returning, as are Alistair Petrie and Samantha Spiro (Adam’s parents, Michael and Maureen).
Dan Levy, star of Schitt’s Creek, has joined the Sex Education season 4 cast as novelist and professor Thomas Molloy. He released a photo on set with Emma Mackey to confirm the news and Maeve’s comeback, but he did say she’ll appear in the program “less consistently” according to the Radio Times.

Beloved Cast Comments
According to Mackey’s comments to Total Film, Sex Education Season 4 is also likely to be her last. “It’s just always tricky, it’s different when you’re playing a character who is sort of stuck in time,” she says. “It is a little strange, you know since we’re portraying 17-year-olds and we’re all approaching 30.
It’s a blessing because it serves as a launchpad and has provided us with opportunities in various ways, but I want to gracefully leave it behind. I want to be grateful that it exists, protect it, and take advantage of it while it lasts, but I also think that it should be left alone at this point.”
“Sex Education has been a school, very literally, for all of us, so we can all move on and take what we learned from it as well. It’s fantastic to have received that education, endured that trial by fire, and been thrust into this entire universe. I believe it has strengthened us.”
Gatwa’s tenure as Eric is also coming to an end because he’ll be much more occupied moving forward as the new Doctor Who. Nevertheless, he is pleased with Eric’s farewell, telling Vogue: “He gets the conclusion I intended for him. Things become detangled.”
Jodie Turner-Smith, a member of Queen & Slim, has joined the cast and will be playing “somebody new who comes into Eric’s life” for Sex Education season 4.

Season 4’s Plot
In the season finale of Sex Education season 3, Otis and Maeve ultimately get together before breaking up. Maeve then departs for the US for a study program over the summer, closing another chapter in their will-they-won’t-they romance. Therefore, Sex Education Season 4 will investigate whether or not separation has made either of their hearts grow fonder. A bleed occurred during labor, and later in the finale, Jean gives birth and recovers from surgery. In season 4, it’s likely that we’ll witness the effects of the paternity test result since she also receives the results.
Additionally, Eric and Adam split up in the season 3 finale because Eric finds it difficult to remain in a relationship with someone who isn’t accepting of who they are. Ncuti Gatwa previewed a scene he penned with co-star Aimee Lou Wood as a preview of what we may see from Eric in Sex Education season 4.
“There was one scene that I particularly fought for, and I managed to get it in, which was great,” he said to Vogue. “Aimee and I wrote it, and the day before, we were revising it till around three in the morning. It was a scenario that meant a lot to me in terms of Eric’s journey and relationships because I had never written for Eric before. It seemed really important.”
And in a development that is likely to be the major plot element of the upcoming season, Moordale Secondary pupils learn that their school is being sold to developers and are instructed to find alternate arrangements in order to complete their studies. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the upcoming season “will feature a mix of old and new faces as Sex Education season 4 moves on from the shuttered Moordale High in favor of a new school” and that we should anticipate a “creative reset”.

Final Thoughts
The fact that the characters are attending a new school makes them feel as though they are in completely unfamiliar territory. Aimee Lou Wood said to Digital Spy, “A lot of our feeling a little off-center is actually also just because of what is occurring in the tale, which is that they are [at] a new school.”
“Aimee, in particular, has no friends at her new school because her best friend attends a different university in America and she has never before been single. As a result, all of the characters have a lot to learn, which, in my opinion, gives the program a fresh feel.”
