Wednesday has returned with a second season, and fans are eagerly watching and rewatching the episodes. Netflix has reported that the first four episodes, launched as part of a split of the sophomore season, recorded around 50 million “views” in the show’s opening week.

Wednesday’s Season 2 Numbers

Our favorite Tudum newsletter reported the figures and translated them into viewing hours, with Part One of the launch (featuring episodes 1-4) amounting to around 201.6 million hours streamed during the opening window.

Viewing hours are determined by taking the total hours watched by a title’s runtime to produce the “views” metric.

Other sites, like TheWrap and Moneycontrol, noted the 50 million viewer mark after five days. While many measurements are being made, they are all finding the same conclusion: Wednesday is back and is more popular than ever as fans wait for Part 2.

Topping the Charts

The launch also topped local charts from around the world. Part 1 of the series was number one for English-language TV in 91 countries, including the United States and Germany. This feat has not been matched by any other English-language Netflix series at its debut.

The goal to reach? Wednesday’s first season, which racked up 252.1 million views in its first 91 days. This is Netflix’s benchmark for all-time English-language TV performance.

Comparing season 1 to season 2 brings to light how popular Part 1 really is. If you take the 341.1 million hours in the first five days garnered by season 1 and translate it into Netflix’s formula of viewing hours, you get around 50.1 million views in the first week.

This is neck and neck with season 2, even with only four of the eight episodes currently available to watch on the service.

The remaining four episodes are set to drop on September 3rd, with Netflix and other analysts expecting total views to rise sharply once Part 2 is available.

A Different Strategy

Between a creative pedigree and a new release strategy, Wednesday has managed to keep viewers interested despite a two-year gap between seasons. Jenna Ortega took on an executive producer role for the second season, working alongside the famed Tim Burton, who directed each episode.

Instead of a binge-watch style of release in season 1, the second season was split into two parts of four episodes. This not only draws more attention to what’s going to happen, but stretches the conversations around the show, continuing its impact on viewers.

This seems to have led to success so far, with numbers looking extremely promising to surpass the first season’s numbers and continue the spooky legacy of the Addams family.

Get Ready for Part 2

For now, Part 1 has solidified itself as one of Netflix’s most-watched English-language franchises. With Part 2 of Wednesday getting ready to release on September 3rd, viewership tallies are only going to climb higher than before.

It will be interesting to see, once the whole season has been out for a time, how the 91-day numbers will compare between season 1 and season 2.
