HBO’s hit medical drama The Pitt is returning to our screens in January. Season two promises to preserve the same format that made the initial season a success, while placing the shift during a high-stress day.
The series will once again feature a 15-hour shift in the emergency department of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, spanning 15 episodes, each covering an hour of the shift. This time? The shift is during the Fourth of July weekend.
Learn more about the upcoming season of The Pitt below.
When Does Season 2 Start?
The newest installment will premiere on January 8th, with episodes released weekly on Thursdays at 9 pm ET instead of a full-season premiere. With each episode premiering on a Thursday, the second season will end with its last episode on April 16th or the 26th, depending on the outlet’s calendar.
There have been some differences in the finale premiere date, but viewers will just have to wait and see when season two ends.
About The Pitt Season 2

As mentioned above, the second season of The Pitt is upping the stakes during the 15-hour shift. Set during the Fourth of July weekend, the staff must contend with the overflow of holiday-themed trauma cases alongside a crippling power outage.
It’s sure to bring waves of chaos and lots of interactions between our favorite characters. The show intends to build upon the format that won over audiences and critics in season one, rather than reinventing it.
Cast Changes
It should be noted that there are a few cast changes and additions to The Pitt for the second season. Noah Wyle is back as our favorite Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
Sepideh Moafi will jump into the show as Dr. Al-Hasimi, an attending physician who will increase the department’s dynamic. Tracy Ifeachor, who played Dr. Heather Collins in season one, will not be returning for the second season.
Increased Accessibility
The show is aiming to increase its presentation for the second season, along with its award-winning status. American Sign Language interpretations of the show will be available to provide more accessibility to fans.
The Pitt also looks to build upon its industry recognition, already earning multiple Emmy wins, including Outstanding Drama Series.
Possible Third Season
Unlike some other show premieres and renewals that take months, HBO Max decided on a second season quite early. The first season wasn’t finished airing, and the platform decided there needed to be a continuation.
Even now, if viewership and critical reception numbers hold, a third season announcement is completely plausible.
Due to the excitement of the previous season, The Pitt is one of HBO Max’s flagship dramas for the new year, and is one of the most anticipated returns in all of streaming.
Final Thoughts

For viewers who want to catch the first episode right as it premieres, make sure to mark your calendars for Thursdays at 9 pm ET, starting on January 8th.
That way, you won’t miss each new hour of a crazy Fourth of July shift at the hospital, and see what new and crazy procedures are heading to our screens. The season will end sometime in April, leaving us with several months of exciting content.
