Sophie Turner has suffered a “minor injury” on the set of the forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot from Amazon MGM Studios, pausing production for the foreseeable future.
Paused Production
A Prime Video spokesperson announced Turner’s “minor injury,” though didn’t confirm whether it happened on or off-set.
They added, “As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”
The streamer did not confirm how long the pause would last or provide any further details on the injury.
However, a source informed Page Six that Turner would likely return to the set in two weeks, with crew members being busy with prep work in the meantime.
Turner’s Back Issues
Turner has been dealing with pain for a while now.
She previously shared with SiriusXM host Julia Cunningham that she discovered she had “a perpetual back problem” during her intense, months-long training routine before the show started filming.
“We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week, since February last year of training, so it’s been a lot,” she shared.
Sophie Turner explained that “it’s much easier to kind of build muscle if you’ve ever worked out before in your life.” However, this was not the case with Turner. She admitted, “Which I never had. So it has taken me months and months and months to get into good shape. That’s what I’ve learned.”
An insider also shared Turner’s back pain with the US Sun, and how it has progressed since filming began.
“Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the gruelling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far,” the insider stated.
Tomb Raider Reboot
Sophie Turner will be starring as the video game icon Lara Croft in the Prime Video adaptation. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) is writing and executive producing the series.
Along with Sophie Turner, the series stars Martin Bobb-Semple, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.
Filming began in January. While Prime Video has not yet confirmed a release date for the series, it is expected to premiere sometime in 2027.
Past Lara Croft’s
Sophie Turner isn’t the only one donning Lara Croft’s persona on screen. Several celebrities have portrayed Croft over the years.
Angelina Jolie portrayed her in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, while Alicia Vikander took on the mantle in the 2018 film Tomb Raider.
Turner has noted she has “massive shoes to fill, referencing Jolie and Vikander’s past performances.
