One of Paramount+’s premiere shows is coming to an end. After the bloody season 4 finale, Mayor of Kingstown has received its final season renewal.

At the head of it all is Jeremy Renner, starring as Mike McLusky. The series will return production to the Pittsburgh area once more, though no further date or details have been released yet.

The Fifth Season

The final installment of the series will roll out with eight episodes. This is a change from the past four seasons, which included ten episodes per season.

In discussions about the final season, it was possible the season would only have six episodes, but that has since been upped to eight.

The final season will feature Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky and Edie Falco as the warden introduced in season 4.

Popularity of Sheridan Shows

All of Taylor Sheridan’s shows have been massive hits, but this is the first to set an end date since Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount+.

New seasons of Tulsa King, Landman, and Lioness have followed suit. Mayor of Kingstown, with Jeremy Renner at the center, has solidly drawn viewers to the platform.

It went from a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes for season 1 all the way up to 100% for its more recent fourth season. While it has drawn a good number of viewers, the show does not have the same level of impact as other Sheridan dramas.

This is especially true as of late. Mayor of Kingstown was released at the same time as Landman and Tulsa King for their newest seasons, yet only the final two charted on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 of streaming originals.

With high expenses to make the show and not as much viewership as the other Sheridan shows, it might be understandable why the show is ending with a fifth season.

The End of Season Four

The end of season 4 ended with a bloody mess. Mike’s (Jeremy Renner) control over Kingstown is threatened as new competitors filter in through the vacuum of the Russians. This forces him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from damaging the town.

Along with the town, his family falls into increasing danger. To top it all off, Mike must deal with a headstrong new Warden to protect his family while also fighting off demons from his tumultuous past.

The threads left open will be wrapped up in the final eight episodes, examining the aftermath of the fight and the rest of Mike’s story.

Originally Planning for Seven

While there will only be five seasons, Sheridan originally planned for seven.

In a Screen Rant interview, Dillon stated: “[Sheridan] has an ending for it in Season 7. Whether it goes that far or that’s where we get [who knows], but he has an ending, and everyone knows about it. Our goal is to get to that Season 7, because that’s as far as we can get, because that’s where he’s always had it.”

Unfortunately for the pair, there will not be a season 7, but hopefully they can take elements from the future ideas and compile them into a fitting conclusion.
