Star Search is back, and Jelly Roll is at the center of it. The popular show is getting a revival from Netflix, providing a new place for stars to prove their worth to the judges and to the world.
Jelly Roll has officially been named one of the judges, launching him back into the limelight. Learn more here.
Jelly Roll’s Success as Singer and Mentor
Jelly Roll has most recently been on our news feeds with his incredible weight loss of over 270 pounds, but there is more to this celebrity than that. Jelly Roll spent years as a smaller musical artist before his breakthrough in 2020 with the song “Save Me.”
Transitioning to country music, he has since found his place in the genre with other hits like “Son of a Sinner” and “Need a Favor.”
Now, he’s turning his attention to the newest batch of stars. While the country singer never competed on a reality singing competition himself, he has been exposed to how they work.
Jelly Roll was a guest mentor on American Idol for Season 22. He became such a hit with the contestants and fans that the show made him the first-ever Artist in Residence for Season 23, mentoring prospective singers for weeks on their journeys throughout the show.
What is Star Search?
Star Search was on air from 1983 to 1995 with host Ed McMahon. There was a short 2003 to 2004 reboot with Arsenio Hall on CBS, but it only lasted one season before disappearing from our screens.
Netflix has decided to bring the show back again, finally releasing details about the series. Each episode featured a batch of various talented people as they competed for stardom, and quickly became a launching pad for future icons.
Rich History of the Show
As mentioned above, Star Search helped launch the careers of some of the biggest celebrities on our screens today.
This includes Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Usher, and even comedians like Adam Sandler, Conan O’Brien, and Dave Chappelle.
Netflix hopes to bring in the next round of superstars with its revival.
The Revival
Netflix has released an official logline for the show, reading:
“The talent is bigger, the stakes are higher and the format is more interactive than ever. Each episode will spotlight the best up-and-coming performers across numerous categories — music, dance, variety, comedy, magic, and juniors — as they compete head-to-head for their shot at stardom.”
The official logline continued, “With an arced competition structure and weekly eliminations with real-time global voting, the series builds dramatic momentum, making every live episode an unmissable event.”
Who Else is Judging?
Alongside Jelly Roll, model Chrissy Teigen and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar will be judges for the show. As for the host, Grown-ish actor Anthony Anderson is taking the role.
