HBO has officially greenlit The Chamber of Secrets.
The streaming platform has announced the second season of the new Harry Potter series, which is debuting its first season this Christmas.
Second Season
The news follows suit with HBO’s plan to adapt all seven of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books into seven seasons of television.
Season 2, based on the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will start filming in the fall. While HBO didn’t state a title for the second season, it will most likely follow the title of the second novel.
The renewal comes seven months before the debut of the show’s first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Production Timing
One question that keeps popping up with the second season greenlit is when it will debut. This is especially important as the show must contend with the ticking clock of the young cast growing up as the years go by.
For the first season, filming started in July 2025. This will mean HBO spent 17 months on Philosopher’s Stone.
If HBO begins filming this fall as currently scheduled, the network will have a little less time to have Chamber of Secrets ready by Christmas 2027.
Adding a Co-Showrunner
Jon Brown, a writer for the first season of the TV adaptation, has been promoted to co-showrunner for season 2. He will join current showrunner, Francesca Gardiner.
She expressed her excitement, stating, “As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum. I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on ‘Succession’ through to these recent times together on ‘Harry Potter.’ Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
Brown also commented on his promotion, saying, “I’m incredibly excited to be collaborating with Francesca as co-showrunner. It has been a joy to write on ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Seems you’re never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts.”
Harry Potter Season 1

The first season of the series is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It’s based on the UK’s version of the first Harry Potter book.
In it, Harry turns 11, receiving a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It opens up a world of possibilities to the young boy, while also forcing him to face an enemy from his past.
Behind the Scenes
As of now, there have been no new casting or directorial announcements for the second season.
As for the first season, executive producers include Francesca Gardiner, Mark Mylod, J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
The series is made by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
