Netflix has officially released a behind-the-scenes featurette for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, along with the highly anticipated release date for the newest piece of the series.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Release Date
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 premieres on Netflix on June 25th. It will be two years and four months after the debut of season 1.
Since seasons 2 and 3 were filmed one right after the other, hopefully the wait will be shorter for the final season.
What is Season 2 About?
Season 1 ended with Aang, Sokka, and Katara getting a bittersweet victory against the Fire Nation in the Northern Water Tribe. The three regroup, and this is where season 2 begins.
The trio must journey into the Earth Kingdom to convince the elusive Earth King to aid in their battle against Fire Lord Ozai.
The stakes are raised, and the trio has some growing up to do, especially in the mysterious city of Ba Sing Se.
Exploring New Sets
One of the shining points for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 is the sprawling, practical sets of Ba Sing Se. Led by production designer Michael Wylie, a team created an outdoor set for the actors to interact with.
Executive producer and writer Christine Boylan shared her excitement for the practical set by saying, “Once we got the back lot and we realized we could build Ba Sing Se…I probably cried that day. It was so exciting. All of those buildings were real. We would go in there with our monitors. We would go in there and write.”
Cast Members
The cast consists of new and returning members.
This includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai.
One of the most anticipated additions to the cast is Miyako, who plays the blind earthbender Toph.
Aang will begin his earthbending training with Toph, and their dynamic, as Cormier puts it, “definitely one of those relationships that start off quite rocky. Get it?”
He added, “I’m learning, she’s teaching. …There’s quite a bit of argumentativeness, if that’s a word.”
Behind the Scenes
Albert Kim was the showrunner in season 1, but has since stepped down to executive producer. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers for the final two seasons.
Other executive producers include Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi, and Brendan Ferguson.
Directors for the series include Jabbar Raisani, Anu Menon, Amit Gupta, and Hiromi Kamata.
