Sydney Sweeney is getting her chance in the movie spotlight with box office hit The Housemaid.

The film surpassed $247 million worldwide through its fifth weekend. Also starring Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, keep reading to learn more about the film and its success.

The Housemaid Box Office Dominance

The Housemaid premiered on December 19th with $19 million in revenue in North America.

Due to increasing popularity on social media and word-of-mouth, the R-rated psychological thriller is expected to end its theatrical run at $225 million to $275 million worldwide.

It’s a huge win for mid-budget films, along with a win for Sweeney’s career tally, as her past few films have fallen short of spectacular.

The best part? Lionsgate only spent $35 million to produce the film, resulting in a huge pay day for the company.

The Right Combination of Stars

The film had many things going for it to reach success. In a statement, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Adam Fogelson said:

“‘The Housemaid’ demonstrates what can be accomplished when the right stars — Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins — are matched with brilliant filmmakers and captivating material, with it all coming together to create a truly compelling moviegoing experience and an undeniable appetite for more.”

Later, he commented, “It’s clear from both the globall box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid.”

The film will only continue to grow in popularity when it hits streaming platforms, providing access to a larger audience.

What is The Housemaid About?

The Housemaid centers on a young woman, played by Sweeney, who has a troubled past and becomes a live-inn maid for an ultra-wealthy family (Seyfried and Sklenar). While they may seem picture-perfect to the world, behind closed doors, the truth is much different.

The film was directed by Feig and was adapated from the best-selling novel by Freida McFadden.

Upcoming Film

It’s important to note that The Housemaid is not just a single book, but part of a trilogy by McFadden. On the tails of the first film’s success, Lionsgate has naturally greenlit a second film in the same universe.

Teased at the ending of the first film, The Housemaid’s Secret will follow the second book in the series, with director Paul Feig and Sweeney expected to return.

It will surely add another impressive mark on Sweeney’s acting career.

Heading to HBO Max

After it’s theatrical release, The Housemaid is expected to stream on HBO Max. This is due to the HBO Max-A24 licensing deal being renewed.

While an official date has not been announced yet, it is expected to hit streaming platforms during the spring.
