Amazon MGM Studios has set the release date for the long-awaited Spaceballs sequel.

The Schwartz is coming to theaters in Spring 2027.

New and Returning Cast

Even though the Spaceballs sequel is releasing 40 years after the original, several returning cast members will appear in the film.

Rick Moranis will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz, and Mel Brooks as Yogurt.

Newcomers for the Spaceballs sequel include Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and Lewis Pullman, Bill’s son.

During an interview with People last year, the younger Pullman shared, “Every day was such a trip. It…felt like a bizarre simulation. I just couldn’t believe my luck.”

Behind the Scenes

Josh Greenbaum is the director of the Spaceballs sequel, using a script by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

Producers for the film include Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jeb Brody, Josh Gad, Mel Brooks, Josh Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter. Executive producers include Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

Spaceballs Sequel Announcement

The Spaceballs sequel was first revealed last summer in a video by Mel Brooks.

“Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one ‘Star Wars’ trilogy,” the crawling text reads. “But since then there have been…a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, and prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff, which is both a prequel and a sequel.”

The text goes on to mention franchises like Jurassic Park, Avatar, and Harry Potter that have expanded over the years.

“But in 38 years,” the video concluded, “There has only ever been one ‘Spaceballs.’ Until now…”

Josh Gad also teased the sequel in an Instagram post in 2024.

He captioned the post, “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited.” He added that working with Samit and Hernandez “has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”

He later confirmed the release date on Friday, April 3rd, writing, “May the April 23rd, 2027 be with you!!!”

Details Under Wraps

While we may know the release date now for the Spaceballs sequel, other details are strictly under wraps. This includes plot details and the official title.

Amazon MGM released a quirky synopsis for the film, stating, “the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”

A prior logline followed a similar line of humor, stating the movie is a “non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.”

Release Date

The sci-fi spoof film will be released on April 23rd, 2027, just in time for the original’s 40th anniversary.

Original Film

Spaceballs was released on June 24th, 1987, by MGM.

A decade after Star Wars was released, Spaceballs was created as a spoof. It starred Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and John Candy. Joan Rivers voiced the C-3PO parody character.

The film earned $38.1 million at the box office and quickly became a cult classic among Star Wars fans and others alike.
