Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has just made history in the awards world.
The film not only leads the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards, but sets a new Oscars record with 16 nominations.
It beats the previous record of 14 nominations, shared by ground-breaking films like All About Eve (1940), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016).

Sinners Making History
Ryan Coogler and his film are having a huge Oscars moment.
The film earned 16 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design.
The supernatural thriller centers around Michael B. Jordan playing two brothers in 1930s Mississippi.
Even without the new category of Best Casting, Sinners would have earned the record of most nominations. Now, it will be interesting to see how many awards the film can win during the event.
Other Films to Watch Out For
Coming up next after Sinners in terms of nominations was Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which swiped up 13 nominations.
The next group up all had nine nominations, with the films being Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, and Sentimental Value. Hamnet garnered a highly respectable eight nominations.
Finally, films with four nominations each include Bugonia, F1, The Secret Agent, and Train Dreams.
The Use of AI in Film
Before the nominees were announced, AMPAS president Lynette Howell Taylor commented about the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in cinema.
“We live in a time of limitless technology that enables us to push the boundaries of our cinematic experience and our profound belief is that the heartbeat of film is and will always remain unmistakably human,” she said.
When are the Oscars?
This year’s Oscars ceremony will take place on March 15th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The event will start at 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT on ABC and streaming on Hulu. Conan O’Brien returns to host the event.
