The Digital Debut
Director James Gunn announced the digital release on X on August 12th, 2025. He posted, “#Superman is coming to your homes this Friday, 8/15. Available now for pre-order. Or catch it while it’s still in theaters!”
The digital debut will be available through major retailers, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Some of these retailers are even offering presales on the film, such as Apple TV.
The announcement made by Warner Bros. Discovery says the digital release will include several pieces of intriguing bonus material. This includes a director’s commentary by James Gunn, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.
The physical media debut of Superman will be later than the digital release.
Physical Media Debut
For those viewers who prefer a physical copy rather than the digital, Superman is set to release on September 23rd, 2025, with the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions.
This will be a few weeks after the digital debut, but it will still provide the supplemental material coveted by fans through both purchasing options.

Film’s Current Theatrical Run
Superman opened on July 11th, 2025, pulling in $217 million on its opening weekend, with $122 million from domestic sales and $95 million from international markets. The film has premiered in both IMAX and Dolby Cinema formats.
Currently, the film has grossed over $500 million worldwide, surpassing $300 million domestically. While it was a hit domestically, the international numbers fell a little short compared to other Superman films.
The cast for the film is led by David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
What is Gunn’s Superman About?
Unlike other recent Superman installments, Gunn’s version is centered around a heavier emotional theme. Clark is haunted by the destruction of his homeworld, Krypton, and his family, and wants to form normal ties with humans on Earth.
However, he must constantly face those who see him as a worldwide threat. His biggest adversary is Lex Luthor, who is determined to portray Superman as a menace and danger to society, using less than noble tactics and a weapon called the Hammer of Borevia.
The film focuses on a Superman with human-like qualities, an obsessed Lex Luthor, and a supportive cast led by Lois Lane. Other featured characters include Mr. Fantastic, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, the Mechanic, and our favorite four-legged hero, Krypto.

Overlapping Theatrical and Digital
The decision for a mid-August digital debut while the film still plays in select theaters reflects a change in how digital release windows have changed. With the digital release close to the theatrical debut, the overlap has drawn attention from fans and commentators.
So, if you still want to catch the film in theaters, check your local listings because it may still be on the big screen.
In conclusion, Gunn’s Superman will be available to stream or own digitally on August 15th, 2025. Physical editions will be available on September 23rd, 2025, both showcasing lots of extra content for all the superhero fans out there.
