Avatar’s reign as the highest-grossing movie of all time is expected to end with the upcoming re-release of Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame Encore

The new Avengers: Endgame cut featuring new footage is set to drop this September. Disney has confirmed it will be called Avengers: Endgame Encore.

According to Deadline, Disney reps confirmed the news at CineEurope in Barcelona, the official convention for International Union of Cinemas exhibitors. Disney reps also revealed the re-release will have a custom introduction and a special end tag exclusive to Infinity Vision and IMAX releases.

Eyes on the Box Office

All eyes will also be on the box office figures, though, to see if Endgame can overcome the 2009 motion picture Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time.

For now, Avatar tops the list with a worldwide gross of $2.923 billion, but Endgame isn’t too far behind at $2.797 billion. Endgame previously passed Avatar to take the top spot. However, a 2021 re-release of the sci-fi epic moved it back in front.

But if Endgame’s new cut rakes in more than $126 million, it will be back at the highest-grossing films summit.

Avengers: Doomsday

The film will be released ahead of the next movie in the Avengers series, Avengers: Doomsday, which is due to drop in December.

Doomsday will feature Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Sir Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, and Paul Rudd, who recently admitted he finds it “surreal” to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Being a Part of the MCU

Speaking to Variety, Rudd said, “It’s a surreal thing and an amazing thing to be a part of that.”

“I feel like I’ve made friends with so many of the people over the years, and you mentioned how long it’s been and I think, wow, I’ve been with Marvel for a long time – more than I even realize – but I love whenever I see all the actors that I’ve worked with on these things several times, and there’s something unique to Marvel that is: It makes you feel like a kid.”
