Movies are a huge piece of pop culture, and often the lines within the films are just as important as the actors who say them. While you may not have watched every film, there are some movie quotes that everyone is familiar with, such as Star Wars’ “May the Force be with you.” The most interesting movie quotes are those improvised by the speakers. Not originally in the script, these famous movie quotes are the creation of the actor who spoke them, and are now ingrained in cinema history.

Starting our list of famous movie quotes is “You talkin’ to me?” from Taxi Driver. Within the script, Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro, just needed to look in the mirror. He was preparing to hunt down criminals after being disgusted by the crime in his city. While looking at himself, De Niro utters the famous line as a sort of motivational monologue. The director, Martin Scorsese, loved it and has since become the film’s most recognizable scene.

Kevin Feige, the producer of the film, originally wanted Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., to battle with his secret superhero status. However, Downey Jr. didn’t think Stark would shy away from the glory. In an interview at the end of the film, Stark is asked about Iron Man and is supposed to lie. But Stark tosses the cue cards away and announces his alter ego. It became one of the most famous lines of the franchise and one of the best plot twists in a superhero film.

The film has several quotable moments, many in the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Movie Quotes of All Time. However, the most famous quote from the film is near the emotional climax when Humphrey Bogart’s character, Rick Blaine, talks to co-star Ingrid Bergman’s character, Ilsa Lund. Bogart decided to insert the line on a whim due to near constant changes in the film, and it has now become one of the most recognizable quotes from the Golden Age of Cinema.

Rounding out the top three famous movie quotes is “I’m the king of the world!” from Titanic. While the film itself is pretty famous, the reason for it comes from the number of iconic scenes and quotes from a range of characters. This particular quote comes from artist Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. James Cameron was feeding him lines through a walkie-talkie for the scene, but DiCaprio decided to go off-script for a moment. Today, it has become the Titanic‘s calling card.

Second on our list of famous movie quotes is “Here’s Johnny!” from The Shining. One of cinema’s greatest horror movies of all time, the film is full of pop culture references and quotable lines. This particular line comes during the film’s most frightening scene, when Jack hacks through a bathroom door to get to his wife, Wendy. With a crazed expression, Jack, played by Jack Nicholson, says the creepy ad-lib. The line was inspired by the intro of the late-night host Johnny Carson, and was almost cut by director Stanley Kubrick. However, they kept the line, and it has now become synonymous with horror films as a whole.

Last but not least on our list of famous movie quotes is “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” from Jaws. One of the first blockbuster movies, it is still one of the best films ever made. The ad-lib originated from the producers’ refusal to pay for a boat big enough to hold all the filming equipment and catering, leading many on set to say the line when something went wrong. However, Roy Schneider decided to add it in the film during the first scene where they encounter the giant shark, landing perfectly and quickly becoming a timeless cinema moment.
