Squid Game Season 2

Squid Game, the immensely popular Korean drama that took over Netflix in the second half of 2021, has finally received the green light for a second season. In June, Netflix revealed the news of Squid Game Season 2 on social media by rebroadcasting a statement from series creator, director, and brainchild Hwang Dong-hyuk. Hwang promised somewhat horrifyingly that “we’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su,” implying that there’s another killer doll out there in the Squid Game-verse.

Squid Game’s first season features 455 deaths, making the cast of human stars for a follow-up somewhat sparse. Amazingly, Netflix disclosed that a lot of our favorite actors will be coming back at a recent Tudum presentation. Lee Jung-jae, the victor of the first Squid Game, will be participating again, hopefully without having to enter the competition this time. Frontman Lee Byung-Hun, cop Hwang Jun-ho, and recruiter Gong Yoo will all return in Squid Game Season 2. Former K-pop singer Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-geun were among the newly announced players. However, you’re stuck with us until a Squid Game Season 2 release date is made public—speculating on the series’ future.

Yes, Squid Game Season 2 is definitely coming.

In June 2022, the show’s official Twitter feed published the following message: “On your marks. Get set. Greenlight. Squid Game continues, only on Netflix.”

The “Squid Game Universe,” which Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix, feels has the potential to include live experiences, merchandise, and mobile gaming, will have a Squid Game Season 2, as announced in January 2021.

Lee Jung-jae, who plays the show’s lead character, finally revealed some information about Squid Game Season 2 after months of silence. Thankfully, he gave a general schedule but stated that filming has not yet commenced.

According to rumors from allkpop.com, Jung-jae stated that Squid Game Season 2 will start filming in the summer and that it will probably take around 10 months to complete. “For around 10 months, we also worked on season 1, however, there were delays because of COVID-19. However, because Squid Game Season 2 will be more ambitious in scope, it will probably take longer to finish.”

Hwang has hinted at a potential release date for Squid Game Season 2. He informed Vanity Fair in June 2022 that further episodes would probably run in 2023 or 2024 and that there would, indeed, be more games. He said that Gi-Hun will undoubtedly return and said, “Those games are going to put humanity to the test once more.” (More to come on him.) “There has been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much affection for a second season, so I almost feel like you leave us with no choice,” as creator Hwang Dong-hyuk stated earlier in an AP interview. “I’m thinking about that right now. I’m in the planning stages right now.”

What is Squid Game Season 2 About?

Hwang explained to The Hollywood Reporter how the events of the first season’s final episodes will naturally evolve into Squid Game Season 2. The series’ creator made it clear that he won’t be drawing inspiration from fan theories or what viewers have requested for Squid Game Season 2. Instead, he intends to continue the plot as originally envisioned and begin up where they left off.

The Squid Game on Netflix first came to our attention in 2019. Then it took another two years to finish the filming and production, thus it’s likely that Squid Game Season 2 won’t be released until 2023 or even 2024.

For his performance as Player 001 in season one, actor O Yeong-su won Best Supporting Actor in Television at the 2022 Golden Globes, contributing to the show’s triumph in the honors department. This victory is a first for the famous event and a Korean actor.

Squid Game: The Challenge will welcome Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun to the cast of Squid Game Season 2, it was disclosed on June 17 during Netflix’s global fan event, Tudum 2023.

They will join returning actors Lee Jung-jae, who played Seong Gi-hun (also known as Player 456) in the series, Lee Byung-hun, who played Front Man (the head of the team running the competition), and Wi Ha-jun, who played Hwang Jun-ho (the outsider who broke into the competition to try and find his brother), in the cast.

Another hypothesis is that Squid Game Season 2 will go more deeply into the Frontman’s past. His background as a police officer would be highlighted in particular in the narrative. In an earlier interview with The Sunday Times, Hwang stated, “I think the problem with police personnel is not simply a problem in Korea. The police force can be quite slow to react, which results in more victims or a worsening of the situation, as I see on the international news. This was something I wanted to bring up. I might have more to say about this in Squid Game Season 2.”

After many viewers suspected that Jung HoYeon’s character Kang Saebyeok might have survived season two, she addressed a number of fan theories regarding the show.

The actor refuted the Reddit rumors in a YouTube video with Vanity Fair. First, the actress rejected the idea that her character’s younger brother Cheoul could enter the game to exact revenge on her. She remarked, “My brother shouldn’t go there to play. I’m going to say no to that.”

“Given that 456 dislikes milk just like 001’s son and that they share the same birthday, there is some merit to the rumors that 001 is 456’s father”, HoYeon said. “But watching it is even more difficult.”

The character of Detective Hwang Jun-ho, played by actor Wi Ha-jun, has also made hints that he would make a comeback if Squid Game Season 2 is ordered.

Fans of the program will recall that the investigator eventually turned to work behind the scenes at the Game after spending the majority of the first season searching for his missing brother. The character eventually discovers that his brother is the front man for the games and is shot by him after refusing to hand over his gun and halt the police inquiry. When Jun-ho was shot and fell off a cliff, that was the last time we saw him.

The enormous killer robot doll we first met in the previous season is featured in a Squid Game Season 2 teaser clip. Her eye flashes the number two as the robot’s famed song sounds in the distance.

Along with the video, Dong-hyuk posted a message in which he discussed how it took 12 years to create Squid Game but just 12 days for it to become so well-known.

The tweet, which was made on the show’s social media channels, hinted at the appearance of well-known characters including Seong Gi-hun and The Front Man.

It read: ‘And now Gi-Hun returns. The Front Man returns. Squid Game Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheoul-su.’

Will Gi-Hun Be Redeemed?

In a recent interview, the main character Lee Jung-jae (Gi-Hun) appeared to reveal that Lee Byung-hun’s character, the Front Man, will transition from a mostly supporting role into a starring one. The central theme of Squid Game Season 2 will be retribution, as we all saw at the conclusion of season 1, and Lee Byung-Hun was a major player who oversaw how the games were played in season 1, according to Jung-jae. So it appears that the two of them will serve as the main characters in Squid Game Season 2.

Only Gi-hun and Cho Sang-woo are still in the competition at the end of season one. Sang-woo accepts Gi-hun’s hand at the last second, but the latter ends up winning and commits suicide.

Netflix has recently unveiled the final eight new cast members that will join the popular series when it returns, even if the release date for the upcoming second season of Squid Game is still uncertain.

Update Roundup

In connection with the cast of Squid Game Season 2 and the showrunners meeting for their first table read of the season 2 scripts, Netflix has revealed that the cast will include Park Gyu-young (Sweet Home, Celebrity), Jo Yu-ri, a former member of Iz*One, Kang Ae-sim (Be Melodramatic, Move to Heaven), Lee David (The Fortress, Svaha: The Sixth Finger), and Lee Jin-uk (Sweet Home).

Squid Game Season 2, according to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk of the series, would “ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?'” and give the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who oversees the games, greater attention. Squid Game Season 2, at least the scripted, fully fictional version that isn’t a reality TV show, may not return to Netflix until as late as 2023 or as early as 2024, according to director Dong-hyuk. However, given that the cast is only now beginning table reads, it stands to reason that we may have to wait a little longer.
