There are some movie quotes that are instantly recognizable — even if you have never seen the movie. They are immediately associated with the franchise they stem from and often bring a sense of nostalgia. However, some of these quotes, as famous as they are, are frequently quoted incorrectly. Oftentimes, the person saying the quote has no idea they have it wrong. Here are 8 movie quotes everyone gets wrong.

8. “Luke, I am Your father.”

Star Wars has many recognizable quotes, but this one might be the most famous. Though it is famous, these are not the words Darth Vader actually says. The true quote is, “No, I am your Father.” The use of Luke’s name might make more sense out of context, but in the movie, it is never mentioned.

7. “Mirror Mirror on the Wall”

In the classic film Snow White, the evil queen relies on her magic mirror for answers. When she famously asks who the fairest of them all is, she does not say “mirror, mirror” as many people believe. What she actually says is, “magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all.

This false quote became so famous that they even made a movie called Mirror Mirror in 2012. It can be difficult to believe this is not the original quote, but alas, the evil queen never says it in the 1937 Snow White movie.

6. “Play it Again, Sam”

This line from Casablanca is a defining moment in the film. However, the exact phrase, “play it again, Sam” is never said. Ilsa gets close to saying it several times with lines like “Play it, Sam,” “Play it once, Sam,” and “sing it, Sam!” but that is as close as she gets to the famously misremembered line.

5. “We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat”

Though this is pretty close to the actual line, it is slightly off. The actual line from Jaws is “you’re gonna need a bigger boat.” This is an interesting example because the line itself was never in the script to begin with. It was an inside joke among the cast and crew that made its way into the movie. Though it was not scripted, it is one of the most famous quotes to come from this classic movie.

4. “Beam Me Up, Scotty”

This line is famously said by Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Even those who have not seen the franchise might use the phrase when they want to get out of a situation. However, Kirk never actually said these exact words. He said things like “Scotty, beam us up” or “beam me up,” but the words “beam me up, Scotty” were never used.

More often than not, Kirk was asking for the whole team to be beamed up, not just himself. This does not stop fans from immersing themselves in the films with this famous line.

3. “Life is Like a Box of Chocolates, You Never Know What You’re Gonna Get”

While the meaning stays the same, the actual quote said by Forrest Gump is slightly different. The actual phrase was, “My mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” With the added context, the past tense makes more sense. Yet, this quote has evolved into a modern-day proverb. People may use it without recognizing the origin, making it more of a neutral phrase than a quote.

2. “Houston, We Have a Problem”

This misquote could be the mandala effect, or it could have simply been misheard. While the meaning remains the same, the true quote was “Houston, we’ve had a problem.”

Whether it was changed purposely to fit current situations, or it was an accidental misquote, many people have misquoted both the movie, Apollo 13, and the real situation. While the situation was dire, their survival turned their calm call for help into an inspirational story of endurance.

1. “Toto, I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore”

This famous quote is used by people of all ages. Whether they are replacing ‘Kansas’ with the location they themselves left from, or quoting the film directly, it is easily recognizable to most people. The line Dorothy really says in The Wizard of OZ, however, is “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.
