5. Let Me In (2010)

In 2008, a Swedish horror film called Let The Right One In was released and received widespread critical acclaim. Since it was relatively obscure in the USA, an English language remake was announced and fans of the original were cautiously optimistic.

With Matt Reeves in charge of directing Let Me In, it came out in 2010 to great reviews despite being a commercial underperformer at the box office. The film follows a 12-year-old boy called Owen who is being bullied at school, leading him to plot revenge against the culprits. He also spies on other residents of his apartment complex and one night he meets a mysterious girl called Abby (Chloe Grace Moretz). Abby only comes out at night time and the two outcasts develop a strong bond, although a series of brutal murders leads Owen to suspect his new friend of terrible crimes.

4. Cloverfield (2008)

Although many people are aware of or have seen Cloverfield, Matt Reeves’ involvement as the director is often overlooked. Found footage films had been popular for a while through movies like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, but Cloverfield took the concept to the next level. The film opens with a group of New Yorkers videotaping a party when a catastrophic event begins to unfold in the city. Unsure what is happening at first, the characters eventually see that a giant monster the size of a skyscraper is destroying the city. As they attempt to survive the chaos they encounter some other horrors and the nature of their relationships begins to emerge.

3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic media franchises of all time, with many different films across many decades, which also makes Dawn of the Planet of the Apes one of the best Matt Reeves movies out there.

When a reboot trilogy was announced that would be focusing on how the Planet of the Apes was established, fans everywhere were intrigued and excited. The first film in the trilogy, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, released in 2011 to critical acclaim and commercial success. This film followed a chimpanzee named Caesar who develops extraordinary intelligence and escapes from his containment. This first film was directed by Rupert Wyatt, with Matt Reeves taking the reins for the sequel.

Matt Reeves did a fantastic job following up with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014. Set 10 years after the events of Rise, humanity has diminished massively in numbers while Caesar and his fellow apes have established a thriving colony. When they encounter a group of human survivors, Caesar must grapple with the apes’ relationship with humanity.

2. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

Since the second film in the Planet of the Apes trilogy was such a success, the studio decided to stick with Matt Reeves for the last film in the trilogy. Set two years after the events of Dawn, War for the Planet of the Apes sees Caesar locked into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson). When the apes are captured once again by the humans, they must endure brutal conditions and escape to decide the fate of the planet forever.

1. The Batman (2022)

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, The Batman is arguably the greatest film that Matt Reeves has ever directed. Starring a younger Bruce Wayne, portrayed by Robert Pattinson, we get a glimpse at the caped crusader in his fledgling days fighting crime in Gotham city. After a series of Gotham’s elite are murdered, Batman is brought in by the police to analyze the bizarre clues left behind by The Riddler (Paul Dano). This forces him to delve into the underground crime network of the city, becoming entangled with fan favorite characters like The Penguin (Colin Farrell), Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). The film racked up rave reviews and almost 800 million dollars at the box office, with a sequel recently announced for 2025.

With a very solid career so far, Matt Reeves has emerged as one of the finest directors of our time. There are plenty of projects yet to be released that he is involved with, such as The Batman 2, The Penguin TV series and even an Arkham Asylum series.
